24" H x 24" W, Oil on Birch Panel

My paintings begin with observation: a shoreline at low tide, a canopy of redwoods, the particular light of a California afternoon. Over time my work has shifted from the interior world of figure and symbol toward landscape: the physical experience of being in a place, and the challenge of making oil paint carry that weight. I'm interested in what a painting can do that a photograph can't.
