“Iridescent Giants” is inspired by the awe of standing among the ancient trees on Bolinas Ridge. Looking straight up from the forest floor, the artist captures the dizzying grandeur of these redwoods, hoping the piece gives viewers a profound sense of quiet majesty and deep immersion.
The artist chose oil on a handmade 24″x48″ cradled birch panel (1.75″ depth) because the sturdy wood perfectly supports their loose, impressionistic brushwork. Instead of relying on traditional dark shadows, the artist sought to reveal the forest’s vibrant energy. A glowing burnt sienna underpainting wraps around the thick edges for a clean, frameless finish, while iridescent purples, teals, and deep greens are layered into the bark. This modern, colorful approach to realism creates a dynamic contrast against the electric green canopy and bright sky.
